Wow!  Hard to believe summer is almost over!  Although the weather wasn't always cooperative, we had some fantastic nights practicing our Yoga in the park.  Thank you to everyone who came out to join us.  I look forward to next summer when we can do it again!

Fall classes are almost ready to start and you'll find all the registration info at www.intoyoga.ca or by clicking here.

We've got several new classes in place this season.  A new Pilates class being offered at Kerrisdale Community Center on Tuesday nights as well as a Kundalini Yoga class on Friday mornings are waiting for you.

Got some young ones you'd like to introduce to Yoga?  We have Family Yoga classes at  Queensborough Community Center Wednesdays for an hour starting at 12:45pm for 2 - 4 year olds and Tuesday evenings at Champlain Heights Community Center for 5 - 7 year olds starting at 6:00pm.

Also at Champlain Heights CC, we're offering a FREE Yoga for All class on Thursday September 15 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.  Stop wondering if this class would be right for you.  Come and check it out.  It's FREE to everyone, whether you've been before or not!

At Kitsilano Community Center, we've got new classes too.  Yoga for Cyclists starts at 7:15pm on Tuesday nights and what better time than 8:30pm to have a Restorative Yoga class to help relax your body and have an incredible sleep!

Of course, we have your regular favorites back like Yoga for the Older Adult, Chair Yoga, Yoga Dance, Baby Sign Language and other Yoga and Pilates classes.  Check everything out at www.intoyoga.ca or by clicking here.

Classes begin shortly, so be sure to REGISTER EARLY!

Tight hamstrings are a common problem for many people.  In this newsletter, you'll learn some poses that will help stretch them out.  You'll also find out how Yoga can boost your creativity.

When it comes to snacking, there's a lot of choices.  Some more healthier than others.  We've got some ideas for you to help you stay on track with choosing good nutrition over empty calories.

Although the First Aid skills in our article talks about kids, they are beneficial for anyone of all ages.  Choking, bloody noses and burns don't just happen to children!

Enjoy this month's newsletter and please register early for classes at www.intoyoga.ca.  We look forward to seeing you!

Hamstring Stretches

Specific yoga poses targeting the hamstrings can alleviate tightness and improve flexibility. The hamstrings are the three muscles than run along the back side of your thigh, connecting your pelvis to your knee. So many people have tight hamstrings that it's not an exaggeration to call it an epidemic.

Smart Snacks

When it comes to snacking, you have some important choices to make. Unhealthful snack choices pack in extra calories without doing much to support your well-being. But smarter snack choices offer benefits that can help trim your waistline.

Candy, chips, and other junk food are a significant source of empty calories. By empty, we mean these foods provide calories from excess fat and sugar, but also provide very few of the nutrients that your body needs. Choosing empty-calorie snacks might give you a momentary lift, but these foods are likely to leave you feeling unsatisfied and low on energy a short time later.  To continue reading, click here.

Yoga Can Boost Your Creativity

Components of yoga such as pranayama, asana practice, and meditation can all contribute to boosting your creativity.

The concept of creativity is so elusive that it’s impossible to say what exactly influences whether or not you come up with unconventional ideas. But here are some ways in which yoga can spark your imagination. To continue reading, click here.

First Aid Skills Parents Needs to Know

There are books on child development and books on what to expect when you're going to have a baby or when that baby heads to college. Nobody ever mentions how many times you're going to save your kids' lives. What parents really need is a manual on the most important first aid skills every parent needs to know.

Whether your children are 20 days, 20 months or 20 years old, these first aid skills are a must for you to know. To continue reading, click here.

Five Health Treats Made With Chia Seeds
Original Recipe

Chia seeds are high in fiber and alpha-linolenic acids, plus they're loaded with calcium magnesium, iron, and zinc. Alpha-linolenic acid is the plant version of omega-3 fatty acid, so chia seeds are perfect for vegans or vegetarians, or for those who don't care for fish and seafood. Oh, and they also have some phenolic acids that may work as antioxidants.

Here's my favorite.

Dark Chocolate Chia Pudding
(6 Servings)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups nonfat milk
  • 1/2 cup chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • pinch of salt

Preparation
:

Place all ingredients in a large bowl and whisk until it's thoroughly combined. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 40 minutes, but if you can wait for an hour or two, it will be even better.

Serve plain or add chocolate shavings, chopped nuts, coconut flakes, or granola.

Nutritional Information:
Each serving has about 200 calories, 6 grams fat, 7 grams protein, 32 grams carbohydrates, and 8 grams fiber. You'll also meet 25 percent of your daily need for calcium, 30 percent of your daily need for magnesium, and 13 percent of your daily iron requirement, plus about one gram alpha-linolenic acid.
